I'm stuck in my job. On my bum for most of the time so it's spreading rapidly. Going to buy a bicycle on one of those "ride to work" tax free schemes.



What bike do you recommend? I fancy a racer like I had when I was a kid. Mr Worm says they are too dangerous and frail for today's roads and I must get a mountain bike. The only mountain bike I ever had weighed a ton and I could hardly pedal it. I hated it.



Gonna spend about £300. Aim is to look like that woman in your photo.

I bought a bike through that scheme a few years ago it is really good, you only pay a few quid a week back.

I got a hybrid bike like you mentioned mountain bikes are far too heavy, I got a hybrid on recommendation and I am really pleased with it, it looks fab it is like one of those old fashioned sit up and beg bikes, I will try and find a picture.I paid £100 2nd hand (only 5 months old), I believe mine was £200 ish new. The good thing is all the mud guards etc are standard often you pay extra for those at places like Halfords, I also invested £20 in some panniers which are good, Oh plus £20 for the helmet which you must get of course

That is not the exact bike but it is very very similar, same colour, same handle bar and seat,and wicker basket is the same, but mine is a slightly different shape more rounded in the middle.



The good thing is mine is an aluminium frame which makes it lighter, that is an important factor.

I'd also suggest a hybrid, but not something that looks like you've stolen it off a Post Mistress in 1957 like Marfa's.

Oh, and look for last years models, they're often almost identical (and in some cases better) than the current models and are heavily discounted.



Don't get a mountain bike solely for road use, the big fat tyres on it and gearing are not designed for that.

That is the whole point, it looks so old fashioned it is actually cool!



Mentioning stolen/post mistresses the seats on RM bikes are fantastic, gel with suspension

theres them nerw "kit" bikes with just the 1 gear coming out gradually over here, they look cook as heck, can get the parts in any colours you want at all and look amazingly cool.....for a bike

You'll Be able to do ur weekly shop with that basket mm, just go and fetch mr sum bread and milk please oh and don't forget ur helmet

Actually, when I went looking for a bike for Worm Girl I stumbled across those, (I'd never seen them before, not being interested in that type of bike) there's some very decent bikes amongst them.

, I'm very old fashioned. Do you think it would be ok for long distances, though, or would one like Sandra's be more appropriate? Am thinking about doing the old Hull to Withernsea train line and such like - I'm taking it all very seriously, you know.



Another plus about Marfa's is you never saw people who rode those sorts of bikes in the old days with the hideous helmets. If it was safe enough then, it's safe enough now.



Very Red Robin - how does the one gear jobbie work? Surely you need to change gear when going up a hill, for example? I don't think I'd be very good at assembling a kit bike.

I wear the helmet every time, tbh I feel more confident with it and I do not look like a turtle as I got one with a peak (will find a photograph)..I looked great today, big lipsy sunglasses and my hat riding on a bike which looks like it belonged in the 50s, with my phone playing Commitments in my basket ....Good times
